Waghorne Family

My paternal Grandfather was Ernest Waghorne born in 1914 in Ashford, Kent. His parents were Charles Christopher Waghorne (1878-1949) and Ellen Skinner (1882-1922). Pictured right is Ellen with her 4 children Charles, Ernest, Thomas and Laura. At the age of 40, Ellen Waghorne died leaving her eldest daughter Laura to look after the family. She is pictured blow with her younger sister Catherine born in 1921.
The Waghorne family have a close connection with the railway. Charles born in 1907 worked for British Railways as a Clerk in Ashford. He married Alice Smith and together they raised a family of 6 children. Thomas worked with my grandfather Ernest at Ashford Railway Works. The brothers later moved to Sussex where they worked at Lancing Carriage Works. In 1937 my Grandfather married Nellie Knight in Worthing.. Charles Christopher Waghorne, a painter and builder by trade was the fifth child born to Charles Older Waghorne and Catherine Burden. In total they had eight children; Alice, Arthur, Louisa, Laura, Charles, Thomas, Constance and Annie.
Charles Older Waghorne was the son of Thomas and Mary Waghorne. The couple had 7 other children; Edward, William, Sarah, Samuel, Thomas, Albert and Annie, all born in Kent. The Waghorne family originated from the village of Molash in Kent. but later moved to the village of Great Chart. Thomas worked as a Grocer and owned a shop in Chart Street. By 1881 he and his family had moved from rural Kent to Croydon in Surrey where he lived and worked as a barman in the Duke of Cornwall public house on London Road.
