Smith Family
My maternal Grandmother was Phyllis Smith born in 1911 in Leicester. She was the eldest child of Charles Rowland Smith (1890-1972) and Laura Annie Wheatley (1888-1953). The couple had three other children; Evelyn, Dorothy and Leonard. pictured right.
Charles Rowland Smith was born in Walsgrave, Warwickshire. He was the eldest child born to Oliver Smith (1863-1903) and Louisa Hewitt (1865-1921) who lived at Station Road, Foleshill. They had five children in total; Charles, Arthur, Percy, George and Frank. Oliver Smith was employed as a coal labourer and died in 1903, a day before the birth of his youngest child. Charles, aged only 13 was now the master of the family. and in August 1903 he became a printers apprentice to WW Curtis of Coventry. He went on to work as Overseer at Blackfriers Press in Leicester and was made a Freeman of the City of Coventry and president of the Leicester Printers Managers and Overseers Association.
The Smith family largely originated from the Foleshill area of Coventry and were employed in the textile industry. Oliver Smith was the son of John Smith (1831-1882) and Lucy Smith (1833-1908), both born in Foleshill. Together they had six children; Emily, William, Oliver, Ada, Louisa and Herbert. The family lived in Windmill Lane, Foleshill and were all employed as weavers.
John Smith was the son of Richard Smith (1788-) and Ann Heatherley (1794). They and their other three children Mary, Hannah and Elizabeth were all employed as Silk Hand Loom Weavers.
