Knight Family

My paternal Grandmother was Nellie Knight born in Worthing, Sussex in 1916. She was the youngest of four children born to Charles John Knight (1878-1949) and Ellen Emily Hookham (1879-1946). Their other children were Charles, Herbert and Maud. The family lived in Lyndhurst Road in Worthing. Charles John Knight (right) was born in Eastbourne, the first of three sons born to George Knight (1846) and Ellen Austin (1856). Although Charles worked as a painter by trade and also spent time serving in the Army. His two brothers were George born in 1880 who became a domestic servant and Albert born 1883 who worked as a hairdresser.

George Knight was born at Blakehurst Farm near Warningcamp, Sussex in 1846. His father was Charles Knight born in Angmering in 1816 and his mother was Clara Lucy Holden born at Warningcamp in 1815. The family lived at Blakehurst Cottage where Charles worked as an Agricultural Labourer. Charles and Clara had four children; Charles, Jane, George and William. Between 1847 and 1854 Clara died and Charles later remarried to Jane born 1825 in Burpham. He went on to have three other children; Henry, Fredrick and Caroline.

Prior to living at Blakehurst the Knight family can be traced to the village of Angmering in Sussex. Charles? parents Charles Knight (1783) and Lydia Thorpe (1786) bought up their 8 children in the village; Mary, William, George, Charles, Henry, Benjamin, Jane and Robert. Charles also worked as an agricultural labourer as did his father Nathaniel Knight who married Anne Robarts at St Margaret?s Church in Angmering in 1769.
