Greenfield Family
My maternal Grandfather was Charles Greenfield born in Worthing, Sussex in 1902. He was the only son born to Nimshi Gilbert Greenfield (1869-1956) and Eliza Kelsey (1864-1931). The couple (pictured right) lived at Western Place, Worthing with their other two children Edith born in 1900 and Edith Ellen in 1906. Charles owned a garage and taxi firm in Wallace Avenue, Worthing and went on to marry Phyllis Smith in 1938.Nimshi was the son of William Greenfield (1829-1895) born in Thakeham, Sussex and Ellen Luckin (1829-?) born in Ashington, Sussex. They had nine children; Bernard, William, Blanch, Louisa, Herbert, Robert, Kate, Frank and Nimshi who were all born in Itchingfield, Sussex.
William was a successful farmer and in 1871 he owned Willowbank Farm in Sharpennyhurst and farmed 240 acres. By 1881 he had inherited Woodshill Farm in West Chiltington (pictured left) from his parents James Greenfield and Eleanor Duke after the death of his father in 1862. William committed suicide in 1895 ?whilst temporarily insane? leaving the running of the farm to his wife Ellen.
James Greenfield (1802-1862) married Eleanor Duke (1805-1893) at St Mary's Church in West Chiltingotn in 1825 .The 1851 census shows James and Eleanor Greenfield living at Woodshill Farm with their three children. In total they had six children; Ellen, Anne, William, Susannah and Mary all born in Thakeham, Sussex and Eleanor born in West Chiltington.
